Research in Chinese studies at Cambridge covers modern and pre-modern China and is mostly focused on the Chinese humanities: history, religion and thought, language and literature, culture and society. Our main research clusters include the study of the Chinese language (ranging from epigraphy and manuscript studies, to linguistics and second language acquisition), modern history (with an emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries), pre-imperial and dynastic China (particularly the early and medieval periods, Dunhuang studies), the anthropology of contemporary Chinese society (with an emphasis on religion, ritual) and modern literature.
